The Halo and The Holy
Week 3- Concept Statement
The Halo and The Holy explores the religious art of the Renaissance and how it is represented and appropriated in the 21st Century. The Jean Paul Gautier 2007 Spring Couture Collection brings this religious iconography into modern fashion through having every model wear a unique halo. The garments also feature lightweight flowing fabrics, turning the models into holy women, walking on air. It is important to see how religion is adapting to the modern world which is constantly changing.
Final Concept Statement
The Halo and The Holy explores the stained-glass window religious art of the Renaissance and how it is represented and appropriated in the 21st Century. The Jean Paul Gautier 2007 Spring Couture Collection brings this religious iconography into modern fashion through having every model wear a unique halo. The garments also feature lightweight flowing fabrics, turning the models into holy women walking on air. Gautier takes inspiration from stained glass windows, utilising their unique style in some of the halos but also in the use of transparent fabrics in the veils.
The Holy and The Halo inverts the traditional black/metal used to hold stained glass windows together with white to represent the Holy light shining through every part of the fashion figure and garment. Golds, silvers and blues are seen throughout the collection and throughout the bible as they each have a symbolic meaning.
Gold- Precious, Holiness & Majesty
Silver- Purity & Truth
Blue- Heaven & Holy spirit
